A short lesson in genetics;

We human's have 46 chromosomes, 23 from each of our parents making us exactly half of each parent. Females have two "X" chromosomes and males have one "X" and one "Y." Our DNA which is a part of the chromonsone plays the most important part because it hold the instructions of life. In the DNA are your genes and this is what determines you looks and other physical attributes.

mtDNA is short for Mitochondria DNA and is a separate DNA strand that is passed down by the female line only. You would get this from your mother and she from her mother and so on. This is why mtDNA is used to track ancestral lines from the female line.
